LA Scara
See you in April 2026 for the 46th edition of the Scara.
Often compared to a Youth World Cup, the Scara is the first major international alpine ski competition for the U14 and U16 categories. Held at the end of each season, it brings together over 1,000 skiers to test their mettle and reveal the champions of tomorrow. Since its creation in 1981, Val d’Isère has played host to many of the great names in French and international skiing. Many emblematic figures of modern French skiing got their start here, including Joël Chenal, Jean-Baptiste Grange, Antoine Dénériaz, Johan Clarey and, more recently, Clément Noël, all of whom passed through Val d’Isère one day in early April.
An international springboard
Like Anna Ottosson, Carolina Ruiz Castillo, Anja Pärson and Janica Kostelic, many international champions took their first steps at La Scara before going on to perform on the world stage.
While competition is of course at the heart of the event, the Scara remains above all a human adventure. Despite the high stakes, it retains a friendly, benevolent spirit, offering young skiers an experience made of strong memories. The parade of nations, with its almost Olympic atmosphere, and the traditional prize-giving ceremony in the main street, are all part of the magic of the Scara.
Anecdotes from Scara
Held at La Daille, the Avaline event has been the birthplace of many stories, not least that of the Alphand family. In 2008, Estelle Alphand won the Slalom and Super-G double, 27 years after her father “Lucho” had won, before her brothers Nils and Sam also won.
La Scara also has some legendary anecdotes, such as that of the minibus in which Ante Kostelic travelled with his children Ivica and Janica. A breakdown on the road to Val d’Isère didn’t stop the young Croatians from performing on the slopes, before becoming great ski champions.
More recently, Hugo Geraci’s victories, followed by those of his sister Romane, continue to inspire the young skiers taking part in today’s Scara.
