la scara

See you in April 2026 for the 46th edition of the Scara

Often compared to a Youth World Cup, the Scara is the first major international alpine ski competition for the U14 and U16 categories. Organized at the end of each season, it brings together more than 1,000 young skiers competing to reveal the champions of tomorrow. Since its creation in 1981, Val d’Isère has welcomed many of the biggest names in French and international skiing. Many iconic figures of modern French skiing made their debut here, including Joël Chenal, Jean-Baptiste Grange, Antoine Dénériaz, Johan Clarey, and more recently Clément Noël—all of whom passed through Val d’Isère in early April at the start of their careers.

An international springboard

Like Anna Ottosson, Carolina Ruiz Castillo, Anja Pärson, and Janica Kostelić, many international champions took their first steps at the Scara before shining on the world stage.

While competition is of course at the heart of the event, the Scara is above all a human adventure. Despite the stakes, it maintains a friendly and supportive spirit, offering young skiers an experience filled with lasting memories. The parade of nations, with its almost Olympic atmosphere, as well as the traditional prize ceremony in the main street, are an essential part of the magic of the Scara.

Scara Anecdotes

Held in La Daille, the Avaline event has given rise to many stories, notably that of the Alphand family. In 2008, Estelle Alphand achieved a Slalom and Super-G double there, 27 years after the victory of her father “Lucho,” before her brothers Nils and Sam also made their mark.

The Scara is also full of legendary anecdotes, such as the minibus in which Ante Kostelić traveled with his children Ivicaand Janica. A breakdown on the road to Val d’Isère did not prevent the young Croatians from performing on the slopes, before becoming great skiing champions.

More recently, the victories of Hugo Geraci, followed by those of his sister Romane, continue to inspire the young skiers taking part in the Scara today.
